Understanding Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) seeks to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern and improve quality of life through respectful, evidence-informed support.
Strategies may help improve communication, increase meaningful choice, build everyday skills and create more supportive home and community environments. Participants and their authorised support networks should be involved in planning.
If a formal assessment or behaviour support plan is needed, it must be completed by an NDIS Commission–suitable behaviour support practitioner engaged by a registered specialist provider. LYFIT assesses each referral against practitioner suitability and capacity before confirming services.

Our Behaviour Support Services
These are common elements of specialist Positive Behaviour Support. Individual services depend on a suitable practitioner, relevant NDIS funding and LYFIT’s confirmed capacity.
Functional Behaviour Assessments
A suitable NDIS behaviour support practitioner may explore the purpose of behaviours of concern through consultation, observation and consideration of the participant’s environment and communication needs.
Positive Behaviour Support Plans
Where appropriate, a suitably recognised practitioner develops person-centred strategies to improve quality of life and reduce the need for restrictive practices. Plans are tailored to the participant.
Implementation Guidance & Collaboration
Families, carers and support teams may receive practical guidance to help apply an approved plan consistently, with appropriate communication and review arrangements.
What to Prepare for a Behaviour Support Enquiry
We only need a brief, non-sensitive overview at first. LYFIT can explain what further documents may be required and how to share them securely.
Participant Goals
Describe the participant’s goals, communication preferences and the kind of support they hope to receive.
Location and Timing
Share the preferred suburb, service setting and any relevant timing needs so availability can be discussed.
Funding and Supports
Let us know whether NDIS funding for behaviour support has been identified and whether other providers are involved.
Consent and Secure Follow-Up
Confirm who may be contacted. Do not upload clinical reports, diagnoses or NDIS numbers through the general enquiry form.
What Matters in Positive Behaviour Support
A good referral pathway prioritises participant rights, meaningful goals, practitioner suitability and clear collaboration.
Respectful & Participant-Led
Support planning should reflect each person’s strengths, choices, dignity, culture and preferred communication.
Collaborative Planning
Behaviour support may involve the participant, family, support coordinator and other professionals, with consent and clear responsibilities.
Transparent Suitability Checks
LYFIT reviews service scope, practitioner suitability, location and availability before confirming an engagement.

Practitioner Suitability
Confirmed before allocationFunctional behaviour assessments and behaviour support plans must be undertaken by an NDIS Commission–suitable practitioner engaged by a registered specialist provider. Registration alone does not confirm current individual practitioner availability.
- ✓Suitability status and relevant capability are checked
- ✓Experience is considered in relation to the participant’s needs
- ✓Location, availability and practical delivery arrangements are discussed

Age and Participant Suitability
Age, goals and complexity are reviewed individually. Please contact LYFIT to check whether a suitable practitioner is available for the participant.
Service Locations
Home, community, school, supported accommodation or online sessions may be discussed. Any proposed setting depends on practitioner suitability, consent and available service capacity.
Current Availability
Referral acceptance and timing depend on suitability, location, required assessment or plan work, funding and a practitioner’s current capacity.
How Behaviour Support Is Assessed, Planned and Reviewed
Where an engagement is agreed, the process is tailored to the participant. Not every referral requires every type of plan or an interim plan.
Referral and Consent Review
Review the participant’s goals, authorised contacts, current supports, funding and the suitability of the referral.
Functional Behaviour Assessment
A suitable NDIS behaviour support practitioner gathers information from the participant, relevant people and the environment to understand behaviours of concern.
Interim Plan, if Needed
Where required, the practitioner may prepare interim guidance while further assessment or a comprehensive plan is developed.
Person-Centred Support Plan
A suitable practitioner develops strategies that support communication, skills, quality of life and less restrictive approaches, based on the participant’s needs.
Implementation and Training
With consent, families, workers and relevant implementing providers may receive guidance on putting approved strategies into practice.
Monitoring and Review
Review the effects of strategies and changes in circumstances and update plans as appropriate to the participant’s needs.
Family and Staff Training
Implementation support helps the participant’s support network understand the purpose of strategies and apply them consistently.
- ✓ Explanation of triggers and early warning signs
- ✓ Proactive and preventative support strategies
- ✓ Communication and skill-building approaches
- ✓ Guidance for recording progress and incidents
Plan Reviews and Collaboration
Reviews may involve the participant, family, support coordinator, providers and relevant professionals to keep strategies current and practical.
- ✓ Review progress towards participant goals
- ✓ Consider changes in health, environment or support arrangements
- ✓ Update strategies when evidence shows changes are needed
- ✓ Coordinate with relevant stakeholders where consent is provided
Restrictive Practices: Rights, Safeguards and Responsibilities
Positive Behaviour Support seeks to reduce and eliminate the need for regulated restrictive practices. If a practice is proposed or used, a suitably recognised practitioner and any implementing provider have different legal responsibilities. Requirements must be checked for the individual situation.
- ✓Participant rights, dignity, choice and safety must remain central
- ✓An NDIS behaviour support practitioner develops plans that include regulated restrictive practices, within a registered specialist provider’s arrangements
- ✓Implementing providers need the relevant registration and practice standards, state/territory authorisation, and evidence lodged as required
- ✓Implementing providers must meet applicable use, incident and monthly reporting obligations
- ✓Arrangements must be monitored and reviewed, with a focus on reducing restrictive practices
For the official distinction, read the NDIS Commission's implementing-provider rules. LYFIT must confirm its particular role and service arrangements for each referral.
Practitioner Capacity Must Be Confirmed
Submitting an enquiry does not automatically secure a behaviour support practitioner. LYFIT will review participant needs, practitioner suitability, location, funding, urgency and current capacity before agreeing to services.
NDIS Funding & Service Agreements
These practical details are discussed during a referral review, before any support arrangement is confirmed.
Funding and Pricing
Check whether relevant NDIS funding is available, which supports are requested, the proposed amount of work and applicable pricing arrangements. Funding or service eligibility should never be assumed from an enquiry alone.
Agreement and Next Steps
LYFIT can discuss scope, responsibilities, communication, scheduling, consent and a service agreement where services can be arranged. Practitioner allocation and commencement dates are confirmed separately.
Start a Behaviour Support Referral Enquiry
Tell LYFIT the participant’s broad goals, general support needs, preferred area and the best contact details. We will explain the next steps and whether an appropriate practitioner may be available.
Privacy and safe referrals: Please do not include diagnoses, detailed behaviour reports, clinical documents or NDIS participant numbers in the general website form or an ordinary email. LYFIT can explain an appropriate secure method if sensitive documents are needed. Only share information with the participant’s consent or other proper authority.

What is NDIS Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support aims to understand behaviours of concern and improve quality of life using respectful, evidence-informed strategies that support communication, choice, independence and safer environments.
Is LYFIT registered for Behaviour Support?
Yes. LYFIT is listed as an approved NDIS registered provider with Behaviour Support among its registration groups. You can check the official NDIS Commission register. Current practitioner suitability and availability must still be confirmed.
Who can conduct a functional behaviour assessment or prepare a plan?
Those activities must be undertaken by an NDIS Commission–suitable behaviour support practitioner engaged by a registered specialist behaviour support provider. Assessment and plan services depend on an appropriate practitioner being available.
Can families and support coordinators make a referral?
Yes. A participant or their authorised representative, family member or professional may make an initial enquiry. LYFIT will discuss consent, goals, available supports and the next steps.
Does a referral guarantee an available practitioner?
No. Practitioner allocation and timing are checked against the participant’s needs, age, location, relevant funding, complexity and LYFIT’s current capacity.
How are restrictive practices managed?
Plans should seek to reduce and eliminate restrictive practices. Where regulated restrictive practices are involved, suitable practitioners and implementing providers must meet their respective planning, authorisation, monitoring and reporting responsibilities.
